Addiction Medicine

Leah Heindel, MD

Sarah Hemphill, MD, MPH

Sarah (she/her) grew up in Maine and attended the Tufts University Maine Track program for medical school. She lived in New England her whole life before moving to Seattle for family medicine residency at Swedish First Hill.

Throughout her training, Sarah always found her people in family medicine and addiction medicine, inspired by their focus on advocacy, community-oriented care, and preventing people from falling through the cracks. Sarah is passionate about full-scope family medicine, with interests in viral hepatitis treatment, reproductive health, and expanding access to addiction consult services to rural communities.

When she is not at work, you can find Sarah in the mountains, on a run, at the pottery studio, or at home sewing and knitting her own clothes, listening to audiobooks, and hanging with her partner and dog.

Shivani Vaza, MD

Shivani was born in India and raised in Canada, where she completed her undergraduate degree in Cognitive Psychology at the University of Alberta. She went on to earn her medical degree at the American University of Antigua and trained across the United States, including in Baltimore—where she first discovered her passion for Addiction Medicine.

She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. For Shivani, working with people in Addiction Medicine has been one of the most meaningful and inspiring parts of her career. She finds it amazing to witness the strength, resilience, and determination of her patients as they overcome challenges, break down stigma, and create new paths forward. Caring for individuals with both substance use disorders and complex medical conditions is not only rewarding, but also a constant reminder of the human capacity for growth and renewal.

Outside of medicine, Shivani enjoys FaceTiming with her mom, getting lost in a good book, or catching up on Jeopardy! while crocheting.

Sports Medicine

Aimee Madsen, MD

Kevin Wu, DO, MBA

Although I was born near Boston, I grew up in Naperville, a suburb about 28 miles west of Chicago . I earned my undergraduate degrees in integrative biology and developmental psychology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I then completed my Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine while also earning my MBA in Healthcare Leadership from Rockhurst University's Helzberg School of Management.

After finishing my Family Medicine residency in Oak Park, IL, I am excited to be in Seattle to continue my training in sports medicine. My professional interests include using ultrasound-guided interventions to treat osteoarthritis and the potential of disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs (DMOADs) to slow or reverse the disease's progression.

In my free time, I enjoy producing electronic music, getting coffee (iced) or matcha, eating sesame and hojicha ice cream, and meeting new people.
