Sub-I Goals and Objectives

We are proud to offer 4th year medical students a 4-week sub-internship. We believe that working with medical students is one of the ways we fulfill our mission of training family medicine doctors who provide excellent clinical care while addressing systemic health inequities.

The sub-internship provides experiences in both inpatient and clinic-based family medicine.

Inpatient

  • Students are an active part of the Family Medicine Service (FMS) team, and serve as the primary point of contact for up to 3-4 patients.

  • Students will perform an initial assessment of patients under consideration for admission to the family medicine service, and implement diagnostic and therapeutic plans taking into account evidence-based information and patient preferences

  • Students will learn to document inpatient care appropriately

  • Students are afforded an advanced degree of independence and responsibility for patient care in preparation for their intern year

Outpatient

  • One afternoon a week, sub-is rotate at an outpatient clinic. All students will be scheduled to work with either a resident or faculty member at the Cherry Hill clinic

  • Students are also welcome to spend time at our other clinical sites: Carolyn Downs, Sea Mar, ICHS, Seattle Indian Health Board, and if applicable, can note this on their application.

Objectives

  • Perform a complete and accurate patient-centered initial history and physical exam for patients being considered for admission or admitted to the family medicine service.

  • Evaluate patients in the outpatient setting, combining subjective and objective data to formulate diagnoses and design appropriate treatment plans that reflect patient-centered, evidence-based practice.

  • Deliver succinct and organized oral summaries of patient cases to residents and attending physicians.

  • Formulate diagnostic and treatment plans independently before review with residents, attending physicians and consultants.

  • Write thorough, and organized admission notes, progress notes, and clinic notes

  • Collaborate with the patient, floor administrators, nurses, social workers, therapists, consultants and the other members of the family medicine team to achieve good patient outcomes taking into account the patient's perspective.

  • Perform procedures as necessary for patient care under the supervision of residents, consultants or attending physicians.
